Irish College
In either 5th or 6th class St. Kilian’s pupils, accompanied by their teachers, take a five day trip to the Donegal Gaeltacht. It is one of the highlights of the students’ years in the Primary School and greatly looked forward to by all.
Staying in groups of between 4 and 12 with local, Irish-speaking families they attend school each morning to brush up their Irish and in the afternoons and evenings immerse themselves in the local culture with visits to wind swept beaches, rocky islands in the north west Atlantic and local beauty spots. Action-filled days are topped off with energetic Irish music and dancing sessions – and the ever-popular talent competition.
Not all students in 5th and 6th classes study Irish (exemptions are subject to strict criteria) but all are invited to join the trip – and they usually do. Much planning and preparation is involved which has made for very successful trips over the last 20 years.
