Irish is taught in 5th and 6th classes in St. Kilian’s.
At the heart of the Irish curriculum is a communicative, task-based approach to language learning, in which the child learns to use the language as an effective means of communication. Topics are based on the children’s own interest, concerns, and needs and children are encouraged to speak the language in activities such as games, tasks, conversations, role-playing and drama. Irish is also used as an informal and natural means of communication on many occasions during daily life in the school. The broader Irish curriculum also aims to instil in the children cultural awareness and pride and so the children attend Irish college in Donegal during either 5th or 6th class.
