Today is a special day for all parents and children who are new to our school. It is also an exciting day for children going into first class in primary school.
A German tradition – die Schultüte
When children in Germany enter school for the first time, one tradition mustn’t be remiss: the school cone! More than ever, the large, cone-shaped sweets bag – also known as a sugar cone and widespread in Germany since the 19th century – is the centre of attention for first-formers-to-be. The cones used to be a fairly plain package filled with nothing but sweets, but nowadays they are nicely designed mostly by the children themselves and they contain numerous other types of presents – small and large – to delight the children.
In Ireland such a tradition does not exist, but in St Kilian’s we are celebrating the first school day the German way.
We wish all new students and their parents a good start and a great time in St Kilian’s.
