Soccer news – St. Kilian’s narrowly beaten in Dublin 5-a-side Final !
Our Primary school 5-a-side team enjoyed a great day in Irishtown Stadium today, participating along with over thirty other schools in the FAIS Dublin 5-a-side tournament, sponsored by Aviva.
We initially played in a four team group, where we made a great start by comprehensively beating Queen of Angels, Wedgewood, with all six of the players in our squad getting on the scoresheet. We then played Guardian Angels from Blackrock and, in an evenly fought encounter, we came through thanks to a goal by Josia and some great defensive work by Eoghan and midfield play by Niko. We then played St. Bernadettes from Quarryvale, but were beaten 4-2. However, thanks to the two goals scored by Oscar Carruthers in this game, we topped the group on goal difference.
In the quarter final, we played St. Patricks of Ringsend. They proved formidable opponents and took the lead midway through the first half. However, St. Kilian’s proved their resilience by forcing an equaliser in the second period, when Oscar volleyed home a cross after good work by Filippo on the wing. The game finished at 1-1 and in the penalty shoot-out, we emerged victorious by 7-6, thanks to two penalty saves by Hugo, who also converted his spot kick.
We then met St. Lukes, Mulhuddart, in the semi-final. Josia opened the scoring, after which Oscar and Filippo added to the tally before Hugo crucially saved a penalty which could have seen St. Lukes get back into the game. This qualified us for the final where we came up against a very strong St. Dominics team from Tallaght. It proved a very close game with the Tallaght team scoring the only goal of the game. St. Kilian’s pressed for an equaliser and created some good chances but couldn’t make the break through and lost 1-0, though the six players – Oscar, Filippo, Josia, Hugo, Niko & Eoghan – all received their runners-up medals at the end.
