On Saturday, the 5th October 2013, 20 primary students from the classes 6A and 6B travelled to the Centre for Peace and Reconciliation in Glencree to perform a play. The play with music, written by Frau Davitt, is called “Apfelsinen für Deutschland” and tells the story of Operation Shamrock. The children were wonderful and made us proud. So many people, including the German Ambassador Herr Lübkemeier, complemented the actors on their performance.
The Operation Shamrock Gathering was being hosted by Glencree, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Dublin and the Irish Red Cross as part of the Fáilte Ireland initiative “The Gaterhing 2013”. They celebrated and commemorated the Irish Red Cross initiative of 1946, when nearly 1,000 young children from Germany, Austria and France were brought to Ireland after World War II to recover from the devastation of war in their home countries.
Last Saturday the former foster children and foster families were invited to celebrate the day together, to re-visit the place which became their first Irish home and to share their memories and experiences.
