Bonn, 26 to 30 June 2013
In June six students from 11 DLL (German Language and Literature) with their teacher, Dr. Eva Reinhofer, participated in “Spun United Nations” in Bonn. Una Connolly, Mareike Henning, Niamh Sauter Cook represented Indonesia and Lukas Hallen, Lukas Hegner and Moritz Welz were the delegation representing Ghana.
They brought resolutions to the Ethics Committee, the Committee for the Environment, the Economy and Trade Committee and the Human Rights Council where they discussed topics such as organ trafficking, economic crime, water scarcity and child labor. One drama continued into the middle of the night when one member of the delegation was even woken up on 29 June at 2:32 a.m. because Indonesia had declared war on China. The Security Council deliberated until a peaceful solution at 6 a.m. was negotiated after hours of feverish discussion with other young people who came from all parts of the world. This occurred not only in the committees, but also at dinner.
All six students worked very hard, participated in interesting discussions in their committees and developed passionate final speeches. They looked a little tired at the end of the session, but their enthusiasm was undiminished. They would like to participate again in the “United Nations simulation”.
