St. Kilian’s students Isabella Redmond (7c) and Finn Redmond (2b) competed with great success in the 2014 Sugarcraft competition of the Dublin Sugarcraft Guild. This event is held biannually and attracts a very large audience and participation from all over Ireland. With over 300 cake entries this year in 23 categories it was a fantastic event which took place in The City West Hotel and Conference Centre. The event was judged according to British Sugarcraft Guild standards (which are considered one of the highest worldwide) by judges from the British Sugarcraft Guild.
Finn entered in the children’s’ category 8-11 yrs where the theme was ‘fairytales’. Because he wanted to have animals on his cake, he chose ‘Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten’. He worked hard over several days to cover and decorate his cake and model the animals. His efforts were rewarded with a ‘highly commended’.
Isabella entered in the children’s’ category 12-15 yrs where the theme was ‘seaside’. Her crab was modeled from rice crispy treat, then covered in sugarpaste (roll-out icing), decorated with royal icing and finally airbrushed. Her display also included marbled pebbles made from sugarpaste and sea kelp made from gelatin. The array of techniques and the final look of her entry gained her not only a gold medal, but also the title of ‘Best in Class’.
