The former German Shamrock child Elisabeth O´Gorman visited the 7th DM class in St. Kilian´s German School on the 21st of October 2014. The students are participating in the German competition Schülerwettbewerb zur politischen Bildung.Elisabeth O´Gorman whose parents died in the war was one of the German children who was fostered by an Irish family in 1946. These children were rescued from starvation in post war Germany and brought to Ireland as part of the Operation Shamrock. 50 of these children stayed in Ireland and it was for them that St. Kilian´s German School was founded.
Mrs O´Gorman came to Ireland as an orphan without any possessions, wearing only a wool jacket with many holes. Now she has lived in Ireland for more than 68 years. She is very grateful for the extraordinary help she received from Ireland. The Operation Shamrock enabled her to survive, train for a job and found a family.
Impressed by Mrs O´Gorman´s words the children listened attentively. They will never forget the special lesson.
