From 12th to 14th May a delegation of students from the green school committee in St. Kilian’s, accompanied by school principal Ms. Lynch and the green school coordinators Herr Sundermann and Ms. Kavanagh, travelled to Berlin to collect their prize of 25,000 Euros for gaining second place in the annual german schools abroad competition, “Students build bridges worldwide” sponsored by the Association of German chambers of commerce and industry. The prize giving ceremony, which recognises and awards best practise and innovative work amongst the german schools abroad network, is hosted every two years at the world conference for the Association of the chambers of industry and commerce. This year the event was opened with an address by Minister for finance Sigmar Gabriel and the prize money was handed over by the Minister of State for foreign affairs, Dr. Maria Böhmer and Eric Schweitzer, president of the German chamber of industry and commerce.
The work done so far as part of the “green school” project was recognised, and measures taken towards creating a sustainable campus and promoting environmental awareness were praised. The jury also praised the whole school nature of the green school initiative which is driven by students of St. Kilian’s Primary School, Secondary School and LFI.
A huge congratulations go to all the students, teachers and administration staff who have been or are currently involved in the green school project. This is a phenomenal achievement indeed and with this prize money, they will now be able to realise some of their more costly environmental projects, thereby securing a greener campus for the entire school community.
Much thanks must be extended to Frau Adelberger who documented the work of the green school committee, submitting the application on their behalf. We are sincerely grateful for her support.
Finally, a special congratulations go to the delegation of students who travelled to Berlin and represented their green school co- members so well, speaking in German on stage in front of hundreds of delegates from all over the world. The representatives were Sophie Linnane, Victoria Vallejo Fucella, Joanna Harnett, Ciara Connolly and Kilian Conyngham and they were fantastic ambassadors for the school and the green school project on the day and throughout the entire trip.
