We had a busy start to our hockey season on Saturday, September 6 with our minor and senior girls in action followed by our junior boys in the Pembroke tournament.
Senior Girls v Rathdown
Our senior girls led by Captain Anna Heisterkamp lost 3-0 to Rathdown’s premier league team. We were missing several girls from our starting line up and we played well despite the score. The game gave us a chance to try people in different positions and we will be a force to be reckoned with when we have a full squad.
Minor Girls v Rathdown
Our minor girls won 1-0 in a thrilling game against Rathdown. Our defence was excellent with Sadhbh Clissmann having a stormer in goals. We had three new girls out Ella, Sarah (first years) and Ruby a minor and all settled in and all three played super. It’s great for a small school to get new players in. Well Done Girls!
Pembroke Tournament
Game 1 v St. Andrews
Our juniors had a stunning win over St. Andrews in our first game winning 1-0.
It was the best hockey we played on the day. The goal came from a ball moved out from the back to David Noone who found Sasha Küchenmeister on the wing. Sasha transferred back inside to Captain Robbie O Leary who passed the ball to the left side of the circle to Cillian Bourke who swept home to put us 1-0 up.
Final score St. Kilians 1 St. Andrews 0
Game 2 v Sanford Park
We scored two delicious goals from short corners to defeat Sanford Park 2-0.
Cillian Bourke again smashed home and Hugh Perrette got the second from a rebound.
Final score St. Kilians 2 Sanford 0
Game 3 v High School
We were beaten 3-0 by the tournament winner’s High School.
They scored one from play and two from short corners. The boys contested well and gave their all.
Final score St. Kilians 0 High School 3
Game 4 v Wesley
We were a tired team meeting Wesley and they ran out 2-0 winners.
Our back four played really well with Hugh Perrette, Patrick Junghenn, Kalid Alsyegh and Nikola Glayshav having a great tournament. Our midfield led by Robbie O Leary and assisted by David Noone and Killian Bourke gave their all. Up front Tim Kelly Lester, Conor McCrea and Sasha Küchenmeister played their part. Frankie Witte, Cathal Kelly, Sam Staunton and Adam Cantwell came on in games and made a great contribution.
Alex Henry showed his Leinster credentials in goals for St. Kilians. Good keepers make hard saves look easy. Thanks also to Mervyn McDowall for his warm up and warm down routines and his assistance.
Upcoming
St. Kilian’s 6th class primary, first and second year boys will be participating in an 8a side mini blitz tournament on Friday 12th September with Newpark starting at 4 pm. We wish good luck and lots of fun!
