Congratulations to Nikolai Gladyshev (10A) who has been selected to represent St. Kilian’s in the semi-finals of the Poetry Aloud Competition 2014 on the 20th/21st of November in the National Library of Ireland. He will be expected to learn two poems off by heart and to recite them according to his own interpretation: The Horses of Meaning by Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin and one poem chosen from the prescribed anthologies which include The Rattle Bag edited by Seamus Heaney and Ted Hughes (Faber and Faber 1982), Lifelines: Letters from Famous People About Their Favourite Poem edited by Niall MacMonagle (any Edition) and Something Beginning with P edited by Seamus Cashman (O’Brien Press). We wish Nikolai the best of luck and hope that he can make it through to the finals!
Poetry Aloud is an annual poetry speaking competition open to all post-primary students in Ireland, organised by Poetry Ireland and the National Library of Ireland in three categories – junior, intermediate and senior. The competition has three stages: regional heats that took place on the 13th – 24th of October in various venues around the country; the semi-finals on 20th/21st of November and the finals that will take place on the 5th of December in the National Library of Ireland. There will be a winner announced from each of three categories. Each of the winners will receive a cash prize and book tokens will be presented to the teachers from the winning schools.
