The Boys’ Junior final was played at Stella Maris’ ground against Gaelcholaiste Reachrann. After falling behind to an early penalty, the team settled into the game but couldn’t score the equaliser in the first half. The second half was fifteen minutes old when our opponents from Donaghmede counter attacked to double their lead.
This spurred the St. Kilian’s boys to make a final surge in an attempt to get back into the game. Ferdia Geary went on a surging run, scoring our first goal after beating three defenders and rounding the keeper to finish calmly. St. Kilian’s were now in the ascendency and won a penalty with fifteen minutes to go, which was coolly finished to the net by Jonas Carew. St. Kilian’s could sense the apprehension in the G’Reachrann ranks and the third goal arrived when Ferdia doubled his tally with five minutes remaining.
To their credit, Gaelcholaiste Reachrann rallied and St. Kilian’s had to defend stoutly to maintain their lead, resulting in the boys receiving their trophy at the ground that started the careers of John Giles and Eamon Dunphy, amongst others.
