On Thursday, 28th January, as part of the “Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme”, St. Kilian’s was presented with the National Flag and a copy of the 1916 Proclamation. Four members of the Defence Forces visited the school for this short ceremony during which some of our children read parts of the book “Children of the Rising” by Joe Duffy to illustrate what life was like for children during the time of the Easter Rising.
Eva from 6th class ably assisted Lieutenant Aine McDonagh in reading out the 1916 Proclamation, followed by some information about the Easter Rising and an explanation of the meaning of the Irish flag. Afterwards children were allowed to ask questions.
Siblings Lucy and Peter were the ones who were chosen to receive the flag as they are distantly related to Countess Markievicz.
