We here at St. Kilian’s have once again embraced the past and organised a series of events to mark National Proclamation Day on 15th March 2016: We raised the Irish Tricolour that was presented to us by the Defence Forces a few weeks earlier and Nicholas Weafer from 11th class read out the Proclamation of 1916 as Patrick Pearse had done outside the GPO.
Some of Mrs. Golden’s 11th class students have written their own “Proclamation for a New Generation” on behalf of the students of St. Kilian’s; just as the 1916 Proclamation contained the rebels’ hopes and aspirations for the kind of Ireland they wished for in the future, so our students have written down their own Proclamation for 2016 centred around their hopes, dreams and ideals.
Mrs. Bradbury’s 8th class created beautiful and atmospheric art work, Mr. O’Driscoll’s and Ms. Brennan’s music students provided music and songs for the occasion and 10th class (including James Connolly’s great-granddaughter Meadhbh!) prepared a narrative to place all of these events in context.
Finally, as part of Flag Week, Mrs. Dennehy’s students raised awareness for the need for cancer research and raised € 313.00 for this cause. Thus, as with last year, here was another great opportunity for real cross-curricular and inter-departmental work.
