Our boys’ soccer team, consisting mainly of 7th class students (one from 6th class), performed heroically at the International Schools Euro Championship in Brittany. In the group stages, they recorded wins against Guyane (South America) and two French regional school teams (Bocage & Charcot) but were beaten by Portugal and the eventual winners, Malherbe.
In the knock out stages, we were involved in the process of deciding 5th to 8th position in the tournament. We played USA and after a 0-0 draw, we emerged as winners after our 5-4 success on penalties. This brought us to the play off for 5th and 6th place, where we played Rosa Parks, another French region team. After a great first half performance, taking a 2-0 lead, we were ‘pegged back’ and were trailing 3-2 when Marc Garrigos played an excellent through ball for Marti Marti Gomez to break on to and equalise. In the ensuing penalty shoot-out, our luck deserted us and Rosa Parks gained the upper hand.
So, after our six day trip to Brittany, we were satisfied with our efforts to finish in 6th place in the tournament, which hosted 19 teams in total, across a boys and girls competition.
Squad – Felix Welz, Marc Garrigos Fabra, Adam Abu Shabab, Marti Marti Gomez, Abubakr Elhag, Kieran Dobson, Liam McQuaid, Noah Migge, Alex Carrigy, Ruben Nash Ramanos.
