On 9th May 2017 St. Kilian’s German School and Lycée Français d’Irlande held their annual Elysée Treaty debate with contributions from 11th class students in English, German and French. The debate was initiated in 2013 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the treaty of friendship signed between France and West Germany at the Elysée Palace in Paris.
This year’s motion was: “60 years on, the EU has lived up to the ideals of the Treaty of Rome: Peace, Freedom, Solidarity, Tolerance and the Rule of Law.”
The debate was organised by Ms Golden and Ms Cassan and was chaired by Mr Callan. Each of the five participating teams consisted of five students (three from St. Kilian’s, two from LFI) who worked together on research and in preparation of the arguments for and against the motion. Three teams proposed the motion, two opposed but all delivered an impressive level of debate and rebuttal of their opponents’ arguments. The adjudicators, Herr Drechsler, Frau Adelberger, Herr Sundermann and Mme Flynn were then faced with the difficult task of deciding on a winning team.
Congratulations to the winners, Mihovil Dzidic, Marie Desplains, Cathal Kelly, Killian Conyngham and Adrian Colin who successfully and convincingly opposed the motion. They were presented with a Perpetual trophy and gift vouchers by our Principal Ms Lynch. All the students were commended for their performances especially those who were debating for the first time.
We look forward to the continuation of this exciting collaborative project, at senior level, between St Kilian’s and Lycée Français d’Irlande.
