On the 14th of October 2016, St. Kilian’s 10A class came together to host a cake sale in aid of Barretstown Children’s Camp and raised €200.
We decided to support this cause because of the fantastic work they do for seriously ill children. Nearly all counsellors and mentors are volunteers and they try to bring a smile or some ounce of solace to children and teenagers who struggle to come to terms with themselves. Tackling the mental aspect rather than the physical, Barretstown not only physically challenges the campers (with treasure hunts and wall climbing) but defies the mental constraints put on the campers themselves, due to a lack of confidence or otherwise. Having seen work they do first hand really reinstates the hope one has in not just humanity but in the strength of the human spirit. And we thank each other and our class teacher Mr. O’Domhnaill for the collective efforts put into this project and also to spokesperson Rosin O’Sullivan for coming speaking with us just before Christmas.
