To celebrate Bloomsday, the St. Kilian’s Primary School pupils were encouraged to dress up in Edwardian clothes on Friday 15th June.
During their classes they explored the culture, listened to music and learned songs of the time and they explored how people dressed in the early 1900s. There was an assembly for all pupils during which 5th class told the story of “The Cat and the Devil”, a children’s story James Joyce wrote for his grandson.
Bloomsday is a celebration that takes place both in Dublin and around the world. It celebrates Thursday 16th June 1904, the day depicted in James Joyce’s novel Ulysses. The day is named after Leopold Bloom, the central character in Ulysses. The novel follows the life and thoughts of Leopold Bloom and a host of other characters – real and fictional – from 8am on 16 June 1904 through to the early hours of the following morning.
