Dear parents and guardians,
The holidays are “just around the corner” and some of you may be wondering how your child can keep in touch with the German language during the holidays and how they can keep and consolidate the knowledge they have acquired during the school year. The German Department would like to use this opportunity to make a few suggestions, how your child can hopefully enjoy improving and deepening his or her German during the summer holidays.
We have the following tips for you:
- Read German books!
The easiest way is to read a German book. We have compiled a small selection of literature and hope that one of these may interested your child.

- Learn vocabulary and expand vocabulary
In addition to reading books, vocabulary can also be expanded by learning vocabulary. The following apps may be suitable for this purpose:
- Lern Deutsch – Stadt der Wörter from the Goethe Institute (more suitable for DN and DS)
- Ankommen from Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge (more suitable for DN and DS)
- Deutsch Lernen 6000 Wörter – Fun Easy Learn (more suitable for DN and DS)
- Lernabenteuer Deutsch Ein rätselhafter Auftrag – Goethe Institut – (more suitable for DM and DS)
- Lernabenteuer Deutsch Himmelsscheibe von Nebra – Goethe Institut (more suitable for DM and DS)
- Practice grammar
In general, we recommend repeating the units from the schoolbooks, but we are aware that this is of course not fun during the holidays. Unfortunately, there is no app that only concentrates on learning grammar. The following page contains a large number of grammar worksheets, but unfortunately the solutions are subject to a fee. But if you simply want to practise, you can download exercise sheets for individual fields on the following page:
- Watch German films and series
In the airplane, in the hammock or on the sofa you can simply watch a German film or a German series. Why not search together with your child for German offers at one of the big streaming providers?
The Goethe-Institut has a large number of films on its website free of charge. However, please pay attention to the age limit and whether the films are suitable for your child.
We wish you and your children a wonderful and relaxing summer holiday!
