On the 29th of November 2021 our 12th class students, accompanied by Mr MacMillan, Ms Scallan, Mr Linehan, and Mr Higgins, travelled to Kippure in County Wicklow. The group was split into two. One group set off to study the levels of transportation and deposition in the upper stage of the Liffey. The other group were taken on a ‘bushcraft’ activity. This involved setting up a shelter, preparing a fire and cooking food in the wild.
When the students finished in Kippure they travelled to Midleton where they stayed overnight in a local hotel. They were treated to a meal here and many availed of the hotel’s leisure facilities.
On the following morning the students were up bright and early to go to Spike Island off the coast of Cobh. The students got a tour of the island and got an insight into prison systems in Ireland from the 1800s until 2004. They also got the chance to see the ‘War of Independence’ museum on the island. Whilst on the island the students entered into a photo competition to best portray Spike Island. The students took this very seriously and it led to some very artistic photo ops.
The students were then given an opportunity to visit Cobh and take in some of the local sites before heading back to Dublin.
