On 15th of September 2022, sports teacher Ms Kristina Gotthardt, student teacher Paula Schulz and a 14-member selection team of St. Kilian’s Secondary School students travelled to Brussels to take part in the Europaspiele organised by German schools abroad. Over 4 days our athletes competed against German schools from Warsaw, Geneva, Toulouse, The Hague, London, Berlin and of course Brussels. It was anticipated that it would be difficult to win against Brussels, because Brussels had always won in the last few years and thus hosted the games. However, to our surprise Brussels was unable to use its home advantage and came 5th behind St. Kilian’s at the end of the competition.
Ms Gotthardt was very pleased with the result. “Of course, 4th place is always an ungrateful place as we were very close on winning the trophies. In the sports of basketball and football, we achieved 2nd place overall. In the athletics competitions, our athletes even received one gold and two silver medals for their excellent performances. Amy Scully won the girls’ long-distance race and Federico Ruiz Montoya came second in the boys’ race. Maite Jacoby took 2nd place in the girls’ standing long jump. Only in Volleyball we have to admit that a bit more training is needed as we only came in 6th.” Congratulations to all on their fantastic performances and to the team from The Hague on winning the 2022 Europaspiele. The Hague will be hosting the next event in 2024. We will be ready and are looking forward to it!
