As part of our Active Schools, the P.E. department have organised different activities and events over the last months involving St Kilian’s Primary and Kindergarten School. An Active School Committee has assembled led by 6th Class and is helping to run additional activities for our younger pupils. The Active School’s committee also did a fantastic job choosing our Active School Slogan ‘Jump, hop, skip, run – Fitness is for everyone‘. Well done to all who participated and congratulations to Méabh (6B) for her winning slogan.
All of 5th & 6th class were invited to be playground leaders and all that chose to do it will get an opportunity at some stage throughout the year. The playground leaders will organise the games every Tuesday breaktime. To accompany this, the P.E. department have also ordered new playground equipment to share out amongst all the students, such as skipping ropes, hoops, soft ball, bean balls & bean bags. All of the students across the whole school, will also get the opportunity to be equipment monitors for their class. This involves collecting and distributing equipment and being in charge of organising it during their PE lessons.
The children from all classes also participated in the national Olympic Movement Active Breaks challenge, an initiative by the Olympic Federation of Ireland, the Active School Flag programme and the Minister of State for Sport and Physical Education Thomas Byrne TD. Every day over four weeks the students had great fun practicing different skills demonstrated in a series of short videos led by Team Ireland Olympians and High-Performance athletes. The short videos included easy fun exercises and activities across a variety of different sports such as athletics, boxing, rugby sevens, swimming, breakdancing, and para powerlifting.
