We’ve begun a new tradition! To mark World Book Day on March 2nd, Frau Simon and Frau Müller organised a ‘Read Aloud Day’ and invited parents to come in to read auf Deutsch to the children in Classes 1 to 6. There was a great response from parents who were joined by some 8th Class students and, of course, teachers from the German Department. Reading stations were set up among which the children circulated. There was a lovely, quiet, productive buzz around the school as children gathered in circles, on mats and on cushions to enjoy the various stories. In between reading duties parents relaxed with coffee in our flower room. It was a thoroughly enjoyable morning. Many thanks to Frau Simon and Frau Müller – their expert organisation ensured it all ran like clockwork.
We also continued another World Book Day tradition which we began last year – One School, One Book. The chosen book this year was Window, by Jeannie Baker, a beautifully illustrated, thought provoking wordless book – which allows enjoyment and discussion through any language. Children from Kindergarten to 6th Class looked at the book through many lens – aging, overpopulation and the environment to name a few – and there are lots of projects on display around the school. Thank you to Ms Bowen for being the organisation and inspiration behind this event.
Mr. Mansfield continued the tradition of raucous reading with the Kindergarten children. He wears many hats and speaks in many voices as he regales the children with his chosen books. They, as ever, thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thank you, Mr. Mansfield.
