On 25th of November 2024, an exciting and linguistically impressive German debate took place between St. Kilian’s German School and Wesley College Dublin. The topic of the debate was: ‘A minimum age for smartphone use should be introduced.’ Both teams had time in advance to prepare intensively for the topic and develop convincing arguments. The St Kilian’s team, led by captain Killian and consisting of Trajan, Filip and John, represented the pro side and argued passionately in favour of a minimum age of 16 for smartphone use. On the other side was the team from Wesley College, who argued against a minimum age. The linguistic skills of the participants were particularly impressive. Both teams presented their points of view in fluent German, with clear arguments and convincing examples. After an intense and lively debate, the three-member jury from the Goethe Institute and UCD German department announced the result: the team from St. Kilian’s German School emerged as the winner! Congratulations to the winning team and well done to all involved. A big thank you to Ms Ishak from UCD German Department and Ms Peterson and Ms Grzonka from the Goethe Institute Dublin for being fantastic adjudicators. Both schools hope to hold another debate next year – then with St. Kilian’s as the host.
