We are excited to host the Exhibition “The children from Operation Shamrock” and to welcome Monica Brandis, the book author of “The Children from Operation Shamrock – Historical Context, Testimonies and Fictionalized Memory Fragments” to St. Kilian’s German School. Monica Brandis will be accompanied by two witnesses, who will share their memories and experiences of Operation Shamrock. The event will take place on Thursday, 7th of March 2024 at 7pm in the Shamrock Hall.
As many of you know, St. Kilian’s German School began as a Sunday school, offering German classes to children who came to Ireland as part of the programme run by the “Save the German Children Society”. This was part of a wider humanitarian project set up by the Red Cross for children from war-torn Europe. More than 400 German children came to Ireland after the Second World War of whom many stayed and built a life here in Ireland.
Monica Brandis is the author of “The Children from Operation Shamrock – Historical Context, Testimonies and Fictionalized Memory Fragments” published in 2020 by Wissenschaftsverlag Trier as part of the series ‘Irish-German Studies’ in collaboration with the Centre for German-Irish Studies at the University of Limerick.
