The Politics & Society class and teachers organised a watch party of the US Presidential Elections from 9.30 pm on Tuesday, the 5th of November 2024, to 8 am on Wednesday the 6th of November 2024 in the Shamrock Hall. The event entailed watching the election broadcast, learning about the election system, conducting a mock debate of the candidates (Team Harris and Team Trump), quiz about US Politics.
The watch party got off to a great start with a brilliant debate between Team Trump (Nicolas, Theo, Killian and Killian) and Team Harris (Thibaut, Hannah and Leo), moderated by the hosts Aidan and Mae.
After the first polls closing and first projections rolling in, students and staff participated in a competitive quiz on US Politics and History, with the winning team securing a box of American doughnuts. After that, students followed the live broadcast throughout the night, some pulling an all-nighter while others nodded off for some time or from time to time. At 7 am in the morning, it was clear that the Republicans had won and students watched Trump’s speech.
This historic event was to very insightful for the students and participating staff. The effects of this election for the US, Ireland and the rest of the world will be felt in the months and years to come. Let’s hope that we can organise another such event in 4 years from now.
Thank you to all staff – in particular Frau Niederprüm, Herr Ringholz and Herr Eidt – for facilitating this event and all students involved!
