Senior Cycle
(5th – 6th year | 11th – 12th class)
During the two years of the Senior Cycle – which follows on from the Junior Cycle and Transition Year – students are prepared for the centralised Irish Leaving Certificate (equivalent to the German Abitur).
Pupils normally take at least seven subjects for the Leaving Certificate. Four of these subjects are compulsory core subjects: German, Irish, English and Mathematics which all students are required to take. In addition, students choose up to four choice subjects according to their interests: Bilingual History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Accounting, Business, French, Art, History, Geography, Applied Maths, Music.
A unique opportunity at St. Kilian’s is the Bilingual Leaving Certificate; this programme is recognised by the Department of Education & Skills and tested by the State Examinations Commission like any other Leaving Certificate subject. It combines History and German Language and Literature and gives students the standard of language competence required to deal with the content of their chosen course through German if they decide to take up a university place in a German speaking country. Students who choose this subject also qualify for a fee remission.
