Applied Mathematics is the study of applications of mathematics to the real world. It is the problem solving side of physics. The course followed in the Leaving Certificate is very similar in content to first year courses in third level in Theoretical Mechanics or Mathematical Physics. The syllabus covers the behaviour of objects in different situations, such as being thrown, bounced, swung around, lifted with pulleys, slid, immersed and dropped! Applied Mathematics is an excellent subject for developing good problem solving skills that will translate into many other career paths like engineering, economics, business and finance.
We offer Applied Mathematics as an option in 5th year with five periods a week. Students have ample time to develop and practise the methods and skills necessary for the subject. Generally students with an aptitude in Mathematics and Physics enjoy and do well in Applied Mathematics.
