CSPE is taught for one class a week in all the Junior Cycle classes. It is an exam subject for the Junior Certificate. What makes CSPE unique is that much of the focus is on active learning. In the Junior Cert 60% of the marks go for a class action project. This involves the students taking on one or more activities which marry education with doing something with a more experiential focus, e.g. a class trip to Dail Eireann, fundraising for a charity or organising a Mock Election. The goal of CSPE is to produce active, participatory citizens.
