Mathematics is a thriving and exceptionally well taught subject at St. Kilian’s, with a high percentage of the school’s Leaving Cert classes sitting the Higher Level exams. Our Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate results have been consistently well above national averages which reflects upon the standard of teaching and learning of Mathematics within the school.
At a recent Mathematics inspection by the Department of Education, it was noted that ‘the quality of teaching was of a good or very good standard……methodologies used were effective….classroom atmosphere was very positive and conducive to learning’. It was also noted that the organisation of Mathematics within the school is very good, with senior management and the board of management providing excellent support for Mathematics.
Mathematics is a dynamic Department and we strive to make Mathematics fun, as well as interesting and relevant. This has been helped by the roll-out of Project Maths, which aims to make Mathematics more meaningful to students.
On top of preparing for exams, there is a chance to partake in an in-house Maths Club. The Mathematics department also encourages students to take part in competitions such as the Mathematics Olympiad.
Mathematics is a compulsory subject for the Junior and Leaving Certificate and is a valuable lifelong skill. The Mathematics department therefore strives to make the subject as enjoyable and rewarding as possible.
