The aim of our department is to develop a sense of enjoyment in the learning of science. We wish to enable our students to acquire a body of scientific knowledge appropriate to their age, and an understanding of the relevance and applications of science in their personal and social lives. We foster investigation, imagination and creativity in our students, as well as an appreciation of and respect for life and the environment.
Science is a mandatory subject at Junior Certificate level. The curriculum covers Biology, Chemistry and Physics topics which are taught over a three year period. Our students complete weekly practical work as we aim to develop their confidence and abilities in practical skills, as well as an awareness of health and safety in the lab.
During Transition Year our students complete separate modules in Biology, Chemistry and Physics where they learn more about the topics covered during the Leaving Certificate curriculum as well as the educational and career opportunities each Science can lead to.
All three Sciences are choice subjects available at Leaving Certificate level, with the majority of our students taking two Sciences and the option of taking all three.
Our extracurricular activities include – Transition Year visit to W5 museum in Belfast, Science Week, Bayer Science Competition, BT Young Scientist and Scifest.
