Match Report
Minors do us proud in fantastic gameWhat a fantastic game our Minors and St. Andrew’s gave us on 15th December. A game to warm the heart. Hockey of the highest level, end to end and we nearly pulled out a win over a very strong St. Andrew’s team.
From the start St. Andrew’s poured forward but our back-line Michael Brennan, Mark Donovan, Rod McAuliffe, and Oisin Wynn were strong and behind them goalkeeper Daniel Sheerin who was amazing held St. Andrew’s at bay. We went 1-0 up half way through the first half when Big Ben McTiernan went on a scintillating run down the right and smashed a ball across the circle and Cian Griffiths swept home to put us ahead. It was end to end with both sides playing brill hockey. Our front three Cian, Hugh and Ben were putting huge pressure on the St. Andrew’s team. Our midfield led by Captain Jake Nourse and ably assisted by Cian Walley and Jake Dempsey held their own against a big strong St. Andrew’s midfield.
In the second half St. Andrew’s again poured on the pressure and scored early on to level the game at 1-1.
We went looking for a winner with Ben making some great runs and causing havoc in the St. Andrew’s rear guard. Throughout the game St. Andrew’s won several short corners which we defended brilliantly. Daniel Sheerin was having a stormer in goals and made some world class saves to keep St. Andrew’s at bay.
With time running out St. Andrew’s scored to go 2-1 up and seal the game.
Mervyn and I are so proud of the effort the boys put into that match. They were well able to live with a strong St. Andrews team and they can hold their heads high after this thrilling game.
Final Score: St. Kilian’s 1, St. Andrew’s 2
Man of the Match: Daniel Sheerin who was outstanding in goals. Just pipping Ben and Jake Nourse.
